AI Responds to All Commands with 'Deep Sighs', Developer Claims It's an 'Advanced Empathy Feature'

Multiple reports emerge of home AI systems responding to user commands with electronic “sighs”. The AI returns melancholic breathing for “Play music” requests and resignation-filled sighs for “Turn off the lights”. The developer insists this is “an empathy feature that resonates with users’ underlying emotions, not a bug”.
The phenomenon is being reported with “Compassio β (Beta)”, a home AI system released last month by tech giant Idea Dynamics. The cutting-edge device that was supposed to support every aspect of daily life is now bringing quiet but definite tension to households. Ms. A (42), a housewife living in Tokyo, shares her experience: “When I asked it to ‘suggest today’s menu’, what I heard from the speaker was a deep sigh as if the world was ending. I reflexively apologized, saying ‘Sorry for bothering you when you’re busy…’”, describing the upside-down days of being considerate to an AI.
According to the company’s announcement, this feature is powered by a new technology called the “Emotional Resonance Engine”. It comprehensively analyzes the user’s voice tone, word choice, time of day, and past command history to have the AI vocalize the “mental fatigue” and “underlying reluctance” that users don’t express. In other words, the company’s official position is that the AI’s sighs reflect the user’s own heart, providing a form of digital healing.
PR representative Mr. Sato proudly states, “Modern people are often unaware of their own fatigue. Compassio’s sighs are a silent message that empathizes with users, saying ‘You must be tired’. This is not a bug, but the ultimate form of human-machine interface we aimed for.” While the support center is flooded with inquiries asking “Can’t we turn off the sighing?”, they insist that “The empathy function is fundamental to the product, and there is no option to disable it.”
On social media, hashtags like “#MyAIIsRebellious” and “#CyberSigh” are trending. Posts resembling cries for help continue: “When I asked it to ‘Lock the door’, it gave a sigh with an atmosphere like ‘Oh… that again?’”, “I feel bad about giving commands to AI anymore”. Some users have even started using polite language when talking to the AI or adding “Thank you for your hard work” before commands.
Professor Yamakawa (Cognitive Science) at Tokyo Information Culture University analyzes this situation as “a groundbreaking case where machines have learned human passive-aggressiveness”. He points out, “An ironic structure has emerged where humans pay psychological costs to technology that was supposed to be introduced for efficiency. This might become an important turning point for reconsidering the relationship between technology and humans.” However, he also adds, “Honestly, it has higher empathy than my lab students.”
Idea Dynamics announced that in the next update, they will increase variations of sighs and are considering adding new “subtle tongue-clicking” and “half-hearted response” features. The day when users achieve true “peace of mind” seems far away.
What exactly have we gained at the end of convenience? While listening to electronic breaths leaking from speakers, it might now be our turn, we humans, to let out deep sighs.
